The headteacher (or ALNCo) should report to the governing body regularly on SEN/ALN at the school, however, the governing body may wish to appoint a governor for ALN to support and assist the governing body to have a better understanding and knowledge of ALN within the school. Being a governor with responsibility for ALN is about doing your best to ensure pupils with ALN get the help and support they need to access the curriculum and to participate fully in the life of the school. The role includes:
confirming that the school has a ALN policy and that it is reviewed annually. *Schools should refer to the ALN Code as their ALN policy, as the ALN Code is a combination of the legal requirement, statutory guidance and non-statutory guidance;
keeping informed of ALN initiatives, nationally and locally, from the Welsh Government and Local Authority;
understanding the role and responsibilities of the Additional Learning Needs Co-ordinator (ALNCo) at the school;
meeting termly, by appointment, with the ALNCo to discuss the progress and effectiveness of the ALN policy (in accordance with the Governor Visits to Schools policy);
working with the child protection link governor (if appropriate);
understanding how the school identifies pupils with ALN and what happens once a pupil has been identified;
being aware of the overall content requirements for an Individual Development Plans (IDPs);
being aware of the progress pupils with ALN are making;
being aware of the budget available for ALN within the school and monitoring its effective use;
reporting, on at least an annual basis, to the governing body on the implementation and effectiveness of the school’s ALN policy, without discussing the details of individual pupils;
writing, or helping to write, the ALN information for the Governors Annual Report to Parents
ensuring that the school prospectus contains a section on ALN provision; and
keeping ALN knowledge up to date by attending relevant training courses run by the Local Authority.
